One of my fave jazz pianists outta London, Robert Mitchell and his trio got their new album out:

The Robert Mitchell 3io has grown out of the ongoing group Robert Mitchell’s Panacea (formed in 2000). The debut album/download – The Greater Good has been recorded (and will be toured) with the support of Jazz Services,33 Records, and Arts Council England. The recording features 5 new originals from pianist Robert Mitchell, and compositions by bassist Tom Mason and drummer Richard Spaven‘s collab with Vincent Helbers. The other music includes ‘Space’ by Galt Mcdermot (as sampled by Busta Rhymes) , ‘Teardrop’ by Massive Attack (Bristolian Legends) and Dance Cadaverous by the truly great Wayne Shorter. This is the first Uk tour for the group , and there will also be news on an additional exclusive version of the album ……

Three books on Saturday

3 books to be purchased for yourself or for your family, friends etc:

Jazz Covers (Jazz LP covers from the 1940s to 1990s) (Taschen)

This volume features a broad selection of jazz record covers, from the 1940s through the decline of LP production in the early 1990s. Each cover is accompanied by with a fact sheet listing performer and album name, art director, photographer, illustrator, year, label, and more. Special features for jazz lovers include a top-10 favorite records list by leading jazz DJs King Britt, Michael McFadden, Gilles Peterson, Andre Torres, and Rainer Trüby, as well as interviews with legendary jazz personalities Rudy Van Gelder (sound engineer that recorded for many labels such as Blue Note, Impulse!, and Prestige), Creed Taylor (founder of many labels and one of the best jazz producers ever, credited also for bringing bossa nova to the US and fusing it with jazz), Michael Cuscuna (Blue Note jazz producer and catalogue researcher, responsible for its most successful re-editions), Bob Ciano (designer at the CTI Label, founded in the ’70s by Creed Taylor, and one of the greatest cover designers ever), and Ashley Kahn (writer, critic, and journalist for jazz whose books include A Love Supreme, Kind of Blue, and The House That Trane Built).

Sleeveface (Be The Vinyl) out in december in UK

“Let’s recap. It started with a Paul McCartney sleeve, then swiftly led to one or more persons in Cardiff, Wales having TOO MUCH fun ransacking their record shelves – from Rolling Stones to Nugent to Bowie to Cymande to Streisand. And people brandishing cameras yelling “up a bit, down a bit”.

William Claxton: Jazz Life (Taschen)

In 1960, photographer William Claxton and noted German musicologist Joachim Berendt traveled the United States hot on the trail of jazz music. The result of their collaboration was an amazing collection of photographs and recordings of legendary artists as well as unknown street musicians.

The book Jazzlife, the original fruit of their labors, has become a collector’s item that is highly treasured among jazz and photography fans. In 2003, TASCHEN began reassembling this important collection of material— along with many never-before-seen color images from those trips. They are brought together in this updated volume, which includes a foreword by William Claxton tracing his travels with Berendt and his love affair with jazz music in general. Jazz fans will be delighted to be able to take a jazz-trip through time, seeing the music as Claxton and Berendt originally experienced it.

Featuring photographs of Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, Gabor Szabo, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and many more.

The Kindred Spirits Ensemble is a dutch orchestra initiated by KC the Funkaholic and honoring the legacy of John Coltrane by playing beautiful arrangements.

In 2006, on John Coltrane’s 80th birthday, the odyssey through Spiritual Jazz was performed at the Paradiso, Amsterdam as an ode and tribute to the great musician. The audio was recorded and meant to be put out as a record, but unfortunately the quality didn’t reach audio cd standards.

2 years later the album is finished and awaits its release date in November 2008… The Love Is Supreme EP is a preview from the full album containing beautiful new arrangements of The Creator Has A Masterplan, Prince of Peace and Naima.

Also forthcoming on Kindred Spirits in November, a sweet album ‘Music’ from a top dutch soul collective Liquid Spirits. LS consists of 8 members, including 4 leadsingers; amongst also features of the legendary Leon Ware and Little Brother rapper Phonte.

Here’s a freebie from the album: Liquid Spirits feat Phonte – If You Dont Love Me
